Before the Darkest Hour
An overview of Halruaan military practices
Halruaa is geographically well defended – high mountains surround her from the north, west and east, almost isolating the country from its neighbors. If invaders do cross into Halruaa by land, they do so through the five mountain passes – with some being more difficult than others to cross. To the south Halruaa is open to the sea by a wide stretch of coast-land – traditionally throughout Halruaa`s long history, only her eastern neighbors have threatened the country by sea.
There are three main components that encompass successful Halruaan military practices in the last few centuries. Firstly, the Wizards of Halruaa actively divine any potential threats to Halruaan safety – using even the most extreme of preemptive measures to neutralize them. Secondly, the magical might of Halruaan wizards discourages most invaders that could not be stopped in advance, and acts as a powerful deterrent. Thirdly, given its advantages in terrain, Halruaan military is focused on the defense of the mountain passes where Halruaa`s natural defenses are most vulnerable, with smaller mobile forces (mostly light cavalry) being ready to deal with the invaders if they threaten the Halruaan heartlands. The coasts and lake Halruaa are defended by a smaller fleet of war galleys. Apart from the standing army, the Wizards themselves can field small but powerful elite units of specialized troops, including the famed Skyships. As of late, during the Mulhorandi invasion, king Zalathorm ordered an undead army to be raised in order to support Halruaan defenses – as after the War, the undead army was not abolished, and it currently represents another large Halruaan standing force.
